Staying Safe During Cinco de Mayo Celebrations
May 4th, 2018 by Brent de la Paz
Coming off the heels of Fiesta, much of San Antonio is still in party mode. Cinco de Mayo is a great time for the city to wrap up the spring celebrations with one last hoorah! While it’s easy to get caught up in the spirit of the holiday, you should always remember that safety should be your top priority. By planning ahead and ensuring a sober ride home, you are doing your part to protect yourself and others on the road.
Alternatives to a DWI Charge
Here are some of the easiest ways to enjoy Cinco de Mayo celebrations without getting a DWI charge:
- Designate a Driver
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again! Designating a driver is one of the best ways you and your friends can safely get to and from Cinco de Mayo parties. There are plenty of ways to have fun without alcohol, so pick a reliable friend to drive your group around, or volunteer to be the driver yourself. No matter who you choose to drive, always ensure that your designated driver has stayed true to their promise of staying sober.
- Take an Uber or Lyft
In the event that your group chose not to designate a driver, there are still ways to make sure you have a safe ride home! By using a ride share service like Uber or Lyft, you and your friends are guaranteed a sober and responsible driver for the evening. To make the pickup process easier, I recommend downloading and setting up both apps before the partying begins.
- Phone a Friend or Family Member
If you’re out of options and looking for a safe ride home, you should turn to someone you trust. By calling a family member or friend, you can feel confident knowing you’ll have a sober and responsible driver. Avoid taking the risk of driving yourself while intoxicated if you have other people you can reach out to first.
Finding an Attorney You Can Trust
Although it is not ideal, mistakes are often made and DWI charges do occur. Should you find yourself in a situation that requires my legal assistance, please contact me immediately. I can build you a strong defense and fight to get you the optimal outcome. Remember, only time can sober you up—so avoid the “quick tips and tricks” for getting sober, because it’s not worth a DWI charge. It is my hope that you all have a fun and safe Cinco de Mayo!
